In a time of overwhelming ambition and stimulation, where addiction, distraction and general dis-ease are rife. It’s never been so important to educate people and particularly young people in self-regulation in order that they can find their own inner power and peace.
Last week I was delighted to return to Lady Eleanor Holles Girls School for the 4th year running with Soulhub Ltd. In past years of their wellbeing day we have…
Taught the whole school, even the teachers, a basic Viennese Waltz - Creating a sense of unity, harmony and equality.
Delivered small therapeutic dance workshops - Exploring life principles through the lens of dance.
Delivered psycho-educational workshops on self-identity and regulation.
This year we were asked to deliver engaging and fun mindful breathing workshops to help students self-regulate their autonomic nervous systems.
So in collaboration with our multi-talented DJ extraordinaire Youssef Boutayeb we created and delivered a unique fusion of mindful movement and breath to Dj music.
It can be challenging doing these types of meditative facilitations even with small groups of willing and paying adults…never-mind a whole year group of teenagers.
However L.E.H. are an amazing school who are doing their best to enable highly educated, responsible and caring humans. Not an easy task in today’s world.
It’s also often hard or even impossible to measure the immediate or longer term effects of our work on others. Particularly when working with matters of mental and emotional health.
All too often our education systems are focused on external analysis and regulation but seldom focus on internal analysis and regulation. This is because it takes SLOWING down and a level of honest presence, attention and care brought about through dedicated and consistent practice. Something that in our high paced, over-stimulated world we have lost the ability to do. However if we are unable to manage our own thoughts and emotions, how are we to manage our behaviour and create harmonious relationships?
After wrapping an amazing day of facilitating 663 teenagers through a selection of psychosomatic exercises of varying degrees of subtlety, I was almost brought to tears by a 15yr old student coming on stage after others had left to say..
One can never expect or insist that everyone follow one’s lead. All one can do is, BE the best version of oneself, with integrity and allow others to choose what they take from every interaction.
And always remember to BREATH and regain your FLOW! 🤗💫
